Learning @ Heights Libraries

What is Learning @ Heights Libraries?  It’s a list of free learning resources for every skill level, brought to you by the Continuing Education Department of the Cleveland Heights – University Heights Public Library.

Learning @ Heights Libraries is accessible through the library’s website, heightslibrary.org. As you scroll down the page, look for the mortarboard or graduation cap and click on the Learning @ Heights Libraries button.  You can also get there by clicking on Services in the top navigation bar and selecting Learning @ Heights Libraries under Computers & Tech.

The first resource we have is Ask a Tech Expert.  This is were you can ask us questions about what is going on with your devices or software. Now, we are not PC technicians and therefore some questions will be beyond our scope of expertise, but if you are having a problem with your tablet or phone or with Microsoft Office we will be happy to answer those questions to the best of our abilities.

To ask a tech expert, you can go to the Online Reference box on the library’s homepage.  To send your question to our tech experts, make sure to select Tech and Digital Resource Questions in the Question Type box. There is also a link to this form on the Learning @ Heights Libraries page.

Next up is our Computer Classes.  Heights Libraries offers some of the best computer classes around.  We offer classes on MS Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; we have classes on Web Coding and WordPress; we offer Tech Talks on Cutting the Cord, Smart Online Shopping and Podcasts; and we offer our Computer Basics Series which is designed to take a new user from little or no knowledge to being able to use the internet.  Unfortunately, classes are not available at this time. In the meantime, though, you can click here for a list of materials and handouts to get a downloadable list of our most popular class handouts.

Our Computer Basics series is not only designed to get someone using the internet – it’s on the internet! If you click the Computer Basics Series link, it will take you to our Training and Classes page where you can click on each class to go through the training at home at your own pace.

We also offer a wide range of Online Tutorials for all ages and skill levels:

DigitalLearn.org. The Public Library Association’s website, Digital Learn dot org, is a collection of self-directed tutorials for beginners to increase their digital literacy.

Lynda.com. Heights Libraries offers its cardholders access to lynda.com, a leading online learning company that provides engaging, top-quality individual instructional videos, taught by experts in the areas of business, software, technology, and creative skills. lynda.com is for intermediate and advanced users; it is not recommended for beginners.  You will need your Heights Libraries card and PIN to use Lynda.

GCFLearnFree.org. The GCFLearnFree.org program helps beginner, intermediate, and advanced computer users from Microsoft Office and email to reading, math, and more. GCFLearnFree.org offers 125 tutorials, including more than 1,100 lessons, videos, and interactives, completely free.

Learn to Type. Learn to type at home with Big Brown Bear. The classic keyboard game can teach you to type with proper keyboarding skills.

These are just some of the wonderful ways we can help you learn more at Heights Libraries.  We can’t wait until we can see you in person again for our regular classes and our one-on-one tutorials, but in the meantime, using Learning @ Heights Libraries is the next best thing.
