The Zane Book List
A couple of years ago, there was a newspaper article that reported that the mysterious Zane had been outed by her grandson who mentioned Zane was his grandmother to impress a girl. True? I don’t know but I’m beginning to suspect it wasn’t. The real Zane outed herself, according to the Biography Resource Center: African Americans when she noticed people online and in person passing themselves off as Zane.
The real Zane — Kristina LaFerne Roberts — has a degree in chemical engineering and had a long career in insurance sales before her writing became a full time career.
Zane started by writing erotica and sending them in e-mails to her friends. They demanded more. She built a website www.eroticanoir.com and the demand for more grew. She started her own publishing company, called Strebor Books when all the major publishers offered to publish her — if she toned down the sex scenes. With Strebor Books, she didn’t have to.
Since then, she’s made the Essence Bestseller List and the New York Times Bestseller List, won several awards and proven she doesn’t have to tone down anything.
