Lula joins Stephanie as the ex-hooker tuned file clerk and bounty hunter wannabe becomes all attitude and . . . well . . . attitude. Also lending assistance is Ranger, Grandma Mazur and the nefarious detective Joseph Morelli — who has his own reasons for wanting to catch Mo — and catch him soon.
You see, drug dealers are turning up dead in Trenton, New Jersey and everybody’s favorite candy vendor may just have turned vigilante.
APPEAL:
The mystery can get a little gritty a times and the humor can be dark but generally the tone for Three to Get Deadly is light. The pace is rapid with short sentences and paragraphs.
Stephanie narrates in this mystery so it is told in first person past tense. You really get to know the wacky mind of Ms. Plum. Her evaluation of the situations and other people make for great comedy. She makes many quips in telling her story.
Janet Evanovich emphasizes people and the hilarious situations they get into as well as their reactions to their plight. The storyline serves the black humor and satirical bite well, but the mystery is still the book’s payoff. Despite the lighter humor at many points in the book, this is not a cozy or light mystery.
Over the course of the story Stephanie develops as a person and a bounty hunter. There is even the hint of possible romantic interests in Morelli and Ranger.
