What is Your Library Worth to You?

by Greg "The Undead Rat" on May 23, 2009

Some people immediately answer it’s priceless and I’d agree.

But think about the things a public library does.

A public library levels the playing field for all people, grants access to technology and places a nearly limitless amount of information at your fingertips. It is a place to get knowledge and entertainment.

The librarians are there to help you. You don’t need to know your way around the library — a librarian can guide you. They are a walking resource of knowledge — there to help you find what you need and what you want as quickly as possible.

Of course, your are more than welcome to browse too.

At the Cleveland Heights University Heights Public Library you can fill out an online job application on the Internet, pick up a couple of movies, some music and even get help finding a book to read like the last one you enjoyed.

How much money does the library save you?

The Cleveland Heights University Heights Public Library has set up The Library Use Value Calculator — it’s an interactive calculator to give you an idea of how much money you save when you use our library.

It’s set to give you a monthly estimate. And you should include your entire family.

See how my calculations came out

Below is an image showing how it calculated my library use. Realize that the numbers for books, movies, magazines and programs go waaaaay up during the Summer months when the kids are out of school.

During the Summer my kids join the Summer Reading Club which means more books get checked out because they want to get stickers for each half hour they read (or are read to, in the case of the littlest one). Movies are popular with the kids and they love the magic shows and end-of-summer parties that the Cleveland Heights University Heights Public Library system holds each Summer.
