Better Know a Library Staffer: Jess

Here on the blog the other Matchmakers and I share what we are reading, watching, or listening to quite frequently, but we don’t often hear from our other staff members all over the library system. Now, we will be sharing interviews from other staff members so that you the reader can see what we’re reading/watching/listening to all over the Heights Library system!

This interview comes from Youth Services Associate Jess!

Read

What book are you reading at the moment? What are your thoughts on it?

1Q84 by Haruki Murakami and Bananeras: Women Transforming the Banana Unions of Latin America by Dana Frank.

I enjoy Murakami’s beautiful writing, but I’ve been trying to get through 1Q84 for a while now.  The plot is very intriguing but slow to unroll.  I am determined to finish, though I don’t recommend reading this before you fall asleep as the story is somewhat unsettling.

I haven’t finished Bananeras, but already I’ve learned a lot about women’s role in the Banana labor movement in Latin America.  I’d recommend this to anyone who enjoys informative reads and is interested in women’s role in labor movements.

What kind of books do you typically read?

Nonfiction and YA novels

Watch

Which do you prefer: movies or television?

Depends on how I’m feeling, but I don’t watch much of either.  Overall, I appreciate films more than TV.

Have you ever binge-watched a show? If so, what was it?

Broad City, My So Called Life and Freaks & Geeks most recently, though I’ve binged much more in my earlier years.  Some favorites were Dawson’s Creek, The O.C., Law and Order SVU, Boy Meets World, 24, Goosebumps, Are you Afraid of the Dark?…the list goes on

Listen

What kind of music do you enjoy?

Pop punk, indie, folk, noise.

Have you found any new or new-to-you artists/bands lately?

These bands are definitely not new, but lately I’ve been enjoying the sounds of Dinosaur Jr. and Sleater Kinney.  I’ve been seriously slacking in seeking out new music.

I enjoy listening to new music (or new-to-me) on Cleveland’s local college radio stations, WRUW and WCSB.

Do you listen to different music based on the seasons?

Not really, but I do read seasonally

Thanks Jess!
