Heroes of the Civil War

Susan S. Wittman, author of Heroes of the Civil War, starts with a brief description of the US Civil War, and then discusses a variety of heroes from the war. The categories of heroes included are: Courageous Leaders, Battlefield Legends, Lifesavers, and Citizen Heroes. The bulk of the people written about were on the Union side, but I found it interesting that several key people from the Confederate side – including their president, Jefferson Davis, and General Robert E. Lee – were discussed as well.

Wittman includes definitions within the chapters of new terminology, blocks of Fast Facts, many illustrations, and a timeline of the war. At the back of the book there is a glossary, a list of other books to read on the subject, ideas for teachers of how this book can be used in Common Core teaching, useful internet sites, and an index.
