For this book, I had a hand puppet with Velcro parts of the face to add when the story is told (similar to the picture below). It worked out great and the kids loved to be up close and personal with the scary monster. I also had the children yell “Go away!” as I took away the parts at the end.

They cut holes out for eyes and added jewels, construction paper, feathers, stickers and other various supplies to make a great scary mask. Here’s mine:
