Mozart, Golden Globes and Amazon in the Jungle

Who knew a 2005 memoir about a career in classical music would inspire an award-winning “television”* show starring the likes of Gael García Bernal , Bernadette Peters and Malcolm McDowell? Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs, and Classical Music was written by oboist Blair Tindall. She spent 23 years as a classical musician. Her book was optioned by Jason Schwartzman, Roman Coppola and Alex Timbers for an Amazon original series. And now it has won a 2016 Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical. Bernal also won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical.

New to Bernal? Oh you should catch up. He has a wide range of films that you should check out now!

Rosewater, directed by Jon Stewart

The Loneliest Planet

Y Tu Mamá También (required viewing if you are a fan of his!)

Bad Education (ditto!)

The Motorcycle Diaries as Che Guevara

A Little Bit of Heaven

Casa de mi Padre with Will Ferrell, speaking in Spanish

Babel

As always, happy viewing!

*Television is in quotes because this is an Amazon original series. I guess I don’t think of Amazon as a network–at least not yet. The problem with Amazon original TV series (so far) is that they are not yet available on DVD. Which means we can’t get them for the library. So keep your fingers crossed that eventually Mozart in the Jungle, along with Catastrophe, Transparent and The Man in the High Castle, will be available for us non-Amazon Prime members!

  1. I love Gael Garcia Bernal! Some other suggestions: The Science of Sleep, Mammoth, Rudo y Cursi, Blindness, and Deficit. I was a bit obsessed with his films a few years ago 😉
