Gone Crazy in Alabama

Author: Rita Williams-Garcia

This is the third and possibly final book in the ‘crazy summer’ (for lack of a better term) series. In this story the girls spend a summer in Alabama with their grandmother, great-grandmother and extended family. They learn a lot of their family history during their stay. My favorite parts of the book were the parts when the girls would go back and forth between their great-grandmother’s and great-grandaunt’s house and learn that every story has multiple sides, and that the truth isn’t necessarily a part of those sides.

I was so excited to hear that Williams-Garcia was writing a follow-up to the first two novels (One Crazy Summer and P.S. Be Eleven). She does a masterful job at writing a realistic portrayal of the sisters in these books (Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern). Whether the three girls are arguing or getting along, I can practically hear their voices on top of one another making no sense to anyone but them.

This was good, but the first novel is still the best one.

I would recommend this book for readers ages 9-12.
