Liar & Spy

There are a couple books I’m really jazzed about reading soon, some out now and some soon to come.  Right now I’ve just waded into Liar & Spy , the next book from Rebecca Stead, her first since When You Reach Me.  Ms. Stead is so good at having normal events and routines become clues that as a reader you can really buy into the idea that there is something fishy going on with the upstairs neighbor.  Liar & Spy is also about the boundaries of friendship and trust.  The title makes me wonder: is there and a liar and a spy?  Or is it one person?

Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland And Led The Revels There

I’m also really looking forward to The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There.  Whoooooaaaaa, long title, I know.  But that’s how Catherynne Valente rolls.  Her language is so impressive, she adds words into her sentences the way a chef adds hot sauce to make things spicy.  Funny thing is, I didn’t want this book to exist.  See, it’s the sequel the The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making, and that book was so captivating that I wanted the whole story to just be in one book. Sometimes I find a cliffhanger ending compelling, and other times I find it manufactured.  True that September (the main character) lost her shadow, and that is something that must be resolved.  I’m hoping that her shadow returns as a force to be reckoned with.  We know shadow becomes Halloween, the Hollow Queen, ruler of the underworld, but just what this means for September is something we’ll find out in October.
