Noble Bookworms – Adventure

We started off our summer reading with a bang! and focused on adventure stories for the month of June. Adventures can often be hidden inside of other genres: fantasy adventures, animal adventures, tales of survival, mysteries, etc. Characters, world building, plots can all be adventurous in different ways too. Everything was on the table for our group. Needless to say, there were plenty of adventures to choose from.

The list below offers a wide variety of stories – a little something for everyone.

   Two graphic novel adventures

The Stone Heart by Faith Erin Hicks

The Sand Warrior by Mark Siegel

Two young adult adventures

Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde

Three friends, two love stories, one convention: this fun, feminist love letter to geek culture is all about fandom, friendship, and finding the courage to be yourself.

And according to Teen Vogue: ” Full of irreverent humor and in-jokes, it’s geeky and funny, with a heavy dose of self-discovery. . . . . Seeing girls and women uplifting, protecting, and loving each other is extremely powerful especially in the context of fandom.”

Adrift by Paul Griffin

A fast-paced young adult novel about four very different teens lost at sea with no one to count on but themselves.  Worlds collide when the group ventures out to sea aboard a small boat that Stef sneaks out from her dad’s dock. As the waves rise and the fragile vessel weakens, things go horribly wrong. Adrift at sea for days, who will have what it takes to survive?

Two fantasy-ish adventures

The Imaginary by A.F. Harrold

Rudger is Amanda Shuffleup’s imaginary friend. Nobody else can see Rudger–until the evil Mr. Bunting arrives at Amanda’s door. Mr. Bunting hunts imaginaries. Rumor has it that he even eats them. And now he’s found Rudger.

The Wingsnatchers by Sarah Jean Horwitz

Aspiring inventor and magician’s apprentice Felix Carmer III would rather be tinkering with his latest experiments than sawing girls in half on stage, but with Antoine the Amazifier’s show a tomato’s throw away from going under, Carmer is determined to win the cash prize in the biggest magic competition in Skemantis. When fate throws Carmer across the path of fiery, flightless faerie princess Grit (do not call her Grettifrida), they strike a deal.

One classic adventure and one puzzle adventure

Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

The Shadow Cipher by Laura Ruby
