For anyone who is concerned, Quilliam the hedgehog is staying with library staff, and will be well taken care of during the closure!
All About Quilliam the Hedgehog
I looked and didn’t see him. Where is he?
Hedgehogs are burrowers, so if you can’t see him, he is probably snoozing under his blanket or in his sleep sack.
Can you wake him up?
Hedgehogs are nocturnal, so we let him sleep most of the day. He is usually awake and active around 9 am, once in the afternoon, and in the evening.
Can I hold him?
Hedgehogs are covered with quills that can poke people, so only trained handlers can hold him. They also tend to go to the bathroom on whoever is holding them, and we don’t want any accidents.
What is that noise he’s making?
When hedgehogs get nervous or grumpy, they roll into a ball and make a “huffing” noise while puffing out their quills. This is totally normal.
What do hedgehogs eat?
In the wild, hedgehogs are insectivores who mainly eat bugs. Pet hedgehogs like ours, however, eat cat food with occasional bug snacks.
Will he get any bigger?
He is an African Pygmy Hedgehog, and is currently full-grown. Other species of hedgehog can be quite a bit larger.
