Activity:
I made different shapes out of construction paper, each a different color.
I showed the kids one shape at a time and had them guess what color and type of shape each was, while we sang this song:
Do you know what shape this is?
Shape this is? Shape this is?
Do you know what shape this is, I’m holding in my hand?
Rhymes & Fingerplays:
I Can See a Circle Shape
I can see a circle shape, circle shape, circle shape
I can see a circle shape, how about you?
Continue with little square, triangle, rectangle, etc.
Where is Triangle (tune: Where is Thumbkin?)
Where is triangle? Where is triangle?
Here I am. Here I am.
How are you today, sir? Very well, I thank you.
Run away. Run away.
Draw a Circle
Draw a circle, draw a circle
Round as can be.
Draw a circle, draw a circle
Just for me.
Draw a square, draw a square
With corners four.
Draw a square, draw a square
Then draw more.
Draw a triangle, draw a triangle
With corners three.
Draw a triangle, draw a triangle
Just for me.
Round Circle, What Do You See?
Round circle, round circle, what do you see?
I see a square box looking at me.
Square box, square box, what do you see?
I see a triangle looking at me.
Triangle, triangle, what do you see?
I see a rectangle looking at me.
Rectangle, rectangle, what do you see?
I see all the shapes, all around me.
Art:
I gave the kids a page of basic shapes to color. Parents were encouraged to interact with their child and work on naming each shape.
We also played with, rolled, and made shapes out of homemade playdough! Children were encouraged to make as many shapes out of the play-dough as possible. This is always a messy, but fun, crowd pleasing activity!
Easy Homemade Colored Playdough Recipe:

- food coloring
- 1 cup flour
- saucepan
Directions:
- Combine water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food coloring in a saucepan and heat until warm.
- Remove from heat and add flour.
