I’m currently reading Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and I’m loving it! The story, told through interview excerpts, is about a fictional rock band fromthe 1970s that went through an infamous breakup. It has also put me in the music listening mood, the mood where it’s me and my headphones and nothing else matters.
A bit of background: at the Heights Libraries I am the Music Librarian, which means I oversee the purchasing and development of our CD collection. It’s such an awesome responsibility because I’ve always had a strong connection with music. But like everything in life, things ebb and flow, and lately I have not been listening to much music. The last few months have been filled with countless audiobooks and podcasts.
However, following the lives of Daisy, Billy, Karen, Graham, and the rest of the band, has inspired me to really immerse myself in music again. So I thought it would be fun to share some music recommendations with all of you. Some old and some new!
For me, the character of Daisy makes me think of Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine. I’ve been a fan of hers for years and have seen her in concert twice. When she’s performing she has this awe-inspiring, kinetic energy, and all of her fans are enthralled. Also I feel like her voice and lyrics are similar to what Daisy might sound like in real life. If you aren’t familiar with her music, do yourself a favor and stop in and checkout some of her CDs this weekend.
In my department at the library, we’ve been listening to a lot of world music lately which has been a lot of fun. It’s great to getthe chance to hear some unusual instrumentation and sounds. One of our favorites is the album Elwan by a group called Tinariwen. The members are award winning Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali. The group has been around since 1979, so they have a lot of terrific albums to choose from. Come in and grab a few off the shelves!
And now because we all love a good list, here are some other recommendations that I think you’ll enjoy on these warm summer days:
