This week was a big week in children’s literature! The annual Youth Media Awards given out by the American Library Association were announced! All through 2019 committees of librarians, teachers, and others have pored over children’s books in an attempt to name the best of the best. Categories include: literature, picture books, informational texts, beginning readers, and multiple culturally specific awards. Every year is exciting but I’m especially happy that several of my favorites from 2019 were honored. This is also one of the most diverse awards seasons we’ve seen! Check out the full list of award winners here. Any of these titles can be ordered at your nearest Heights Library branch. Happy reading 🙂
Caldecott Medal
The Randolph Caldecott Medal is awarded to the most distinguished American picture book for children.
The Undefeated illustrated by Kadir Nelson, written by Kwame Alexander
Originally performed for ESPN’s The Undefeated, this poem is a love letter to black life in the United States. It highlights the unspeakable trauma of slavery, the faith and fire of the civil rights movement, and the grit, passion, and perseverance of some of the world’s greatest heroes. The text is also peppered with references to the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, and others, offering deeper insights into the accomplishments of the past, while bringing stark attention to the endurance and spirit of those surviving and thriving in the present. Robust back matter at the end provides valuable historical context and additional details for those wishing to learn more. (Summary from Clevnet catalog).
