Northstar Digital Literacy

by | Apr 15, 2021 | Job Blog, Technology, Uncategorized

For this month’s blog post we sat down for an interview with our own Tech Trainer Ann. Ann has been tasked with heading the Library’s participation in Northstar Digital Literacy, an exciting assessment program that is being offered here at Heights Libraries. Here is the conversation that Ann and I had about this fascinating program.

  1. What is Northstar Digital Literacy?

Northstar Digital Literacy is a program from Literacy Minnesota. Northstar has put together online assessments that test the most essential computer and online skills, including using the Internet, Microsoft Office, and more. These online tests are available at digitalliteracyassessment.org. They’re free and self-guided—no library card or sign in required!

  1. What is the Library’s role in regard to Northstar?

The HKIC Computer Lab is an approved Northstar testing location. This means that patrons can have assessments proctored (either in person or virtually) to earn certificates. (But you can also take assessments without a proctor!)

  1. Why is the Library participating in this program?

Many people ask us about what skills they should work on in Word or other programs, or how to quantify their computer skills on a resume. Northstar assessments can help you pinpoint things to work on, and certificates from proctored assessments can be added to a resume! It’s also a great way to supplement the classes we already offer at the Library.

  1. Can anyone participate in this program?

Yes! You can take the assessments via digitalliteracyassessment.org from any computer with an internet connection.

  1. What benefits do our Library patrons receive if they go through this program?

Our patrons can earn certificates through the Library that can be added to a resume. It’s a great way to confirm your computer skills to potential employers!

  1. How does someone contact the library if they want to participate?

Contact testproctor@heightslibrary.org or (216) 932-3600 ext. 1297 to set up a proctoring appointment to earn a certificate! Virtual and in-person appointments are available.

  1. Anything else you want to tell us about Northstar Digital Literacy?

The tests are very interactive—it’s not just a boring multiple-choice test. It’s like using the program inside your browser window. If you’re not sure about a question, you can always skip it and come back to it later.

Also, you can absolutely take Northstar assessments on your own before scheduling a proctored assessment, if you’re interested. Think of it as studying for a test!

Thank you, Ann, for giving us an in-depth look at this exciting new program that the Library is offering to its patrons.
