Picture Book Picks (June)

Hello, all! This is your friendly neighborhood librarian and I’m here to tell you about some new(ish) books that have come across my path.

First on my list is Mr. Zinger’s Hat

Mr. Zinger's Hat

Cary Fagan (words);  Dušan Petri?i? (pictures)

Leo finds out that Mr. Zinger’s hat has stories inside of it! When Mr. Zinger asks Leo to help him get the story to come out they both create an adorable story of their own.  They simply don’t write children’s books like this anymore! I really like this one. It’s adorable, and the illustrations are retro and classic. This book will draw you into the power of storytelling and the power of imagination.

I recommend for one-on-one or small group reading (perhaps at bedtime?) for ages 4 and older.

Next up is Exclamation Mark

Exclamation Mark

Amy Krouse Rosenthal (words); Tom Lichtenheld (pictures)

This is a story about an exclamation mark. It’s about fitting in, standing out, and finding your way. I love this one because of it’s simple and retro illustrations. There are also a few puns that will give the grownups a chuckle. I recommend this also for one-on-one reading for children age 4 and older.

Last, but not least is A Zeal of Zebras

A Zeal of Zebras

Grownups and children will have fun learning the funny, odd, or surprisingly appropriate names for groups of animals. From ‘an Aurora of polar bears’ to ‘a Zeal of zebras’ this book is full of amazing facts about animals along with gorgeous illustrations. Did you know that a group of giraffes is called a journey? I can’t believe it…and I won’t stop believin’ it 😉

I recommend this for use in the classroom, 2nd through 4th grade.
