Class 2.04: Operating Systems

The Operating System or OS translates our instructions into commands the computer can understand.

Simply put, the operating system allows the computer to do things. Many users use the operating system without even realizing.

Modern operating systems use a graphical user interface or GUI. Users interact with the operating system by clicking icons, buttons, and menus.

The three most common operating systems are:

Microsoft's Windows operating system is used on 70% of the world's computers.

Apple's Mac operating system is used on around 17% of the world's computers.

Google's Android operating system is used on over 72% of mobile devices. Google's Chrome OS is used on a small, but growing number of computers.

There are differences between all of these operating systems. Becoming familiar with a new OS may take time.
